COULD YOU LIVE ON £53 A WEEK?

Yesterday, Ian Duncan Smith, Work & Pensions Secretary, in answer to a question by an interviewer on the Today Programme said he could live on £53 a week. A previous caller, David Bennett, a market trader said that after his housing benefit had been cut, he would have to live on that amount could Duncan Smith  do so. I personally don’t think it is possible but, as the saying goes, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so an on line petition has been set up challenging him to do so and after 24 hours it has attracted over 142,000 signatures.

If you would like to sign the petition go here

  1. It ia also claimed today in a national newspaper that David Bennett is a self-confessed gambler and a "ducker and diver". So does he really live on only £53 a week?

    1. I'm not too concerned about David Bennett! I think IDS was a little stupid to claim that he could live on £53 a week and consequently it's no wonder he's been challenged to do so. I don't think for one minute he will accept the challenge though.

    2. Most of us are either too lazy, or genuinely do not have the time, to live on a budget significantly below the level we have currently reached.
